Introduction
This article will explain how to change the DNS settings on the Playstation 4, XBox One, and Nintendo Wii U. This general concept should help in changing DNS on other gaming systems, as well.
Solution
Playstation 4:
- From the PS4 Menu, scroll right to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Select either Wi-Fi or LAN cable (Wired)
- Wi-Fi: Custom > Select Network > Enter Password (automatically saved if you are already using this network) > IP Address Settings (automatic) > DHCP Host Name (Do Not Use) > DNS Settings (Manual)
- LAN (Wired): Custom > IP Address Settings (Automatic) > DHCP Host Name (Do Not Use) > DNS Settings (Manual)
- From there, enter the Primary DNS as "208.67.222.222" and the Secondary DNS as "208.67.220.220"
- Next > MTU Settings (Automatic) > Proxy Server (Do Not Use) > Test Internet Connection
Xbox One:
- From the Xbox One home screen, go to Settings > Network > Advanced settings > DNS settings > Manual. (If Settings doesn't appear on the home screen, select My Games & Apps, then Settings.)
- From there, enter the Primary DNS as "208.67.222.222" and the Secondary DNS as "208.67.220.220"
Wii U:
- From the Wii U Menu, select "System Settings."
- Using the Left Stick, select the "Internet" icon and press the A Button.
- Tap "Connect to the Internet."
- Press the X Button or tap "Connections" in the top-right corner.
- Select the connection you wish to configure.
- Tap "Change Settings."
- Tap the arrow on the right and select "DNS."
- Tap "Don't Auto-Obtain" and enter in the DNS info as follows:
- Tap "Primary DNS" and enter in 208.67.222.222, ensuring you are entering the "." between each number, then tap "OK" to return to the DNS screen.
- Tap "Secondary DNS" and enter in 208.67.220.220, then tap "OK" to return to the DNS screen.
- Tap "Confirm" to return to the manual settings screen.
You can now test to see if your console is routing DNS queries to OpenDNS by visiting the following domain in the web browser of your device:
- welcome.opendns.com
