DISCLAIMER!
There is a bug in firmware version 5.0.0 where rebooting your router will cause "Waiting for an active WAN/Wi-Fi connection." to display unless you disable and re-enable the OpenDNS integration. Version 5.1.0 was released on March 3rd, 2014 that resolves this issue. Customers are encouraged to upgrade to 5.1.0 if their device's firmware has already been upgraded to 5.0.0.
If you are using version 5.1.0 or 4.4.X and still getting this error, please read on.
This article is specific to OpenDNS' Umbrella with Cradepoint routers. If you're just getting started with the integration, watch Cradlepoint's video here for more information: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VamvWQFmSo
Issue
In the OpenDNS integration section of your Cradlepoint device, the "Client Status" says Waiting for an active WAN connection.
Solution
The error usually indicates that the Network IP address of the device is already registered with OpenDNS.
If you want to use the built-in Cradlepoint integration to ensure OpenDNS protection in dynamic IP address situations:
- delete the Network IP address that you registered in your OpenDNS account
- or contact OpenDNS Support to retire an outdated Network IP registration.
The Cradlepoint device passes a unique Device ID to OpenDNS. This Device ID allows us to identify the device without having to rely on the public IP address. This was intentionally designed to work this way since many Cradlepoint devices are designed for scenarios where the IP address will change frequently (such as a DHCP IP being allocated from your ISP). When the IP changes, the Cradlepoint will remain associated with your OpenDNS profile.
Notes:
OpenDNS content filtering will work if you register the public IP address of the network to which the Cradlepoint device belongs; however, this is only best practice if your IP address is not going to change.
It should also be noted that you should not manually adjust the DNS server information within the Cradlepoint to point to our public IP resolvers; enabling OpenDNS filtering through the Cradlepoint device will automatically do this.
