EDIT: Solved it, see below.
Ok, it's been two weeks and my original post is still sitting in "pending approval" status, so I'm trying again.
I've searched the forums (and Google) and read up on some other peoples experiences, but I can only seem to find one other person that has had this issue and there was no answer.
My router is a Nighthawk X6 R8000 using the latest firmware, and it is supposed to support bypass accounts. I have an OpenDNS account, I'm using Netgear LPC only (no network defined on the OpenDNS config page) and I set up parental controls under the Netgear config pages. I know these work just fine as I am blocked constantly from sites. However, I want to create a bypass account for myself. I did create one on the proper page following the instructions on http://kb.netgear.com/25687/, but when I run NetGear Genie, The window for bypass accounts is empty and the message at the top is: No bypass account information is found.
Things I have done to troubleshoot:
- Ran Netgear Genie as Administrator
- Ensured I'm using Netgear LPC only and don't have a network defined in OpenDNS
- Updated NetGear Genie to most recent version (2.4.38 as of this writing)
- Re-installed Netgear Genie
- Disabled Parental Controls - verified nothing was being blocked - re-enabled controls - verified things were blocked again
- Deleted bypass account and re-added it (added several in fact, but none show up)
I'm out of options at this point. Does anyone have any other ideas?
Ok, I figured it out, and this is a UI flaw in the Netgear Parental Controls setup.
This is my second Netgear router with parental controls. Apparently, the parental controls are kept on a PER DEVICE basis, rather than being applicable to all devices. When you are at the Netgear Parental Controls, you are actually setting parental controls for a specific device. Unfortunately, this is not obvious as the Live Parental Controls screen doesn't mention a device at all, just your account name and that's it. Apparently, I have been setting up parental controls for my old router this entire time.
By chance I clicked the "Devices" link at the top and clicked on my router thinking it would just take me back to the same screen and... what do you know, it showed an entirely different setup with no bypass accounts. I added a bypass account and, bingo, it appeared in the Netgear Genie app.
That's an issue with the Live Parental Controls screen. They need to be listing a device name on that screen somewhere so it is obvious you are setting the controls up for only a single device, and what that device is.
