using a router with dyndns to update ip address
Why can't opendns use my dyndns address resolver?
I do not want any pc on the network to run an updater, which is what everyone keeps telling me to do.
All the pcs on my clients networks are constantly changing. I have numerous pieces of equipment (dvrs, apple tvs, etc ) which are always present, but NO permanent pc's.
Seems simple to do, just have a place to set my dyndns name in advanced dynamic settings?
Chap cory

Sofilab, LOL, this was a good one.
Nevahdun, if your router just supports DynDNS.com, it cannot support another service, of course. You would need to select OpenDNS, DNS-O-Matic, or "user defined" from services, if available. Or you may flash your (unspecified) router with an alternative firmware which usually supports nearly every DDNS update service.

Let me see if I can nail down this question. If you have a DDNS service, then you have a URL that is associated with your changing IP address. It appears though that OpenDNS only allows you to put in an IP address and not a URL. It "seems like", if OPENdns would allow users to input their DDNS URL then everything should work. I am curious why something so obvious hasn't been implemented.. Oh, and by the way, all of this could be implemented in a router, which it seems to me is a much cleaner way of doing this.

" I am curious why something so obvious hasn't been implemented."
This has been discussed so many times here. As updates to OpenDNS have to come from the source IP address to be used for the updates for obvious security reasons, referencing another domain name (not URL!) is not the way to go. This domain name could point to any IP address, and the network behind it would be impacted if OpenDNS would be used, and the network the OpenDNS settings was thought to take effect would be impacted too with no settings.
"all of this could be implemented in a router"
Yes, but this here is the wrong place to ask for. You must go back to the router suppliers. And many routers already support at least one of OpenDNS, DNS-O-Matic or "user defined".

I hope that one day OpenDNS comes up with an android app for updating. I have several old android devices that I use around the house for things like streaming music, an alarm clock or even a digital photo frame. It would be so easy to simply have one of these devices update the DNS rather than have my computer run 24/7 just to keep the DNS update. For this reason I have had to settle on using the"family" DNS rather than the super-powerful custom DNS option.

@mail.jds This really isn't the place for posting this since you are talking about an android app and this thread is about using a DDNS service to update. Brief answer is it's unlikely OpenDNS will ever release an update for a mobile device, so your best bet is to do the updating via your router. If you want to respond to this please do so in a separate thread that is not hijacking this one.

Update! - I found a thread that not only answers the question, but explains exactly how to do it!
