network inactive, IP address is taken by another user
I log in to my OpenDNS Dashboard and my network show inactive. My OpenDNS updater has the message Your IP address is taken by another user, and the IP address showing is not the correct one. This happens every day or two. The only solution, as far as I know. is to reboot my router so that it has another IP address, and then update. But this bumps everybody offline which is annoying. I can still use the internet with an inactive network, but I can't access normal websites such as Yahoo Groups because, "This site was categorized in: Forums/Message boards". And of course I can't change the settings via the Dashboard because my network is inactive. After I reboot the router and update the updater, my network shows normally when I log in to my OpenDNS dashboard and everything works fine...until the next day.
I already asked this question and already have a good answer, but I'm just wondering, Do other users have this same continual problem?

Because your IP address is found to be taken by another user for registration at OpenDNS, you also use this other user's OpenDNS settings, and therefore websites may appear blocked unexpectedly and vice versa.

No, this should happen rather seldom. If this happens to you so often, you should raise a support ticket with OpenDNS to find out the root cause and hopefully to get provided with a solution.

If you are receiving a dynamic IP address from your ISP you will need to update the address registered with OpenDNS whenever that address changes. You can either update manually on the webpage, run the updater software that OpenDNS provides, use one of the 3rd party updater software referred to in other places in this forum, or use an update function that is built into the firmware in many modern routers.
Things on OpenDNS end are working as they are supposed to and there is nothing that they can do to "fix" it if you aren't updating the address yourself.
However, if you receive a new IP address from your ISP that is already registered to another OpenDNS user there is something that OpenDNS can do since that address is obviously no longer in use by the other user. Just open a support ticket, or email OpenDNS and they will get things resolved.
Note: All of the above assumes that you are receiving a public IP address from your ISP. If your ISP is putting you behind a NAT and only assigning you a private IP address then the only things OpenDNS can do is block that IP address or range of addresses from the ISP from being registered since it will "move around" between users. If that's the case you'll need to use something like DNSCrypt, one of the paid OpenDNS services that uses a software agent, or get a Netgear router that support LPC, all of which have different ways of making your OpenDNS settings available to you.

OpenDNS is not supposed to fix anything in relation to your ISP assigned IP address or your car or your vacuum cleaner...

ISPs are the only institutions in the world in charge for assigning IP addresses. Complain with your ISP, only with them.

We have more information on maintaining dynamic IP addresses with our service here: https://support.opendns.com/entries/24889200-Dynamic-IP-Addresses-Technical-Detail-and-FAQ but as other users mentioned unfortunately we don't have control over how rapidly your IP address changes. If another user has your IP address registered and you are using the OpenDNS updater client as long as the other network is marked as dynamic you should still be able to obtain that IP address.
If this is happening very frequently please confirm with your internet service provider that your IP address is not NAT'd or shared between many users. You could also enquire about purchasing a static IP address which would eliminate having to keep your IP address updated in the dashboard or having to worry about your old/new IP being leased to others.

I had the same issue and here is what i observed. I am not sure if this is a solution but this worked for me.
I have a Buffalo Router at Home, 2 iPads , 4 android phones and one laptop of mine which was allocated to me by my company. I have updated the Name Server IP Addresses on my Router and Installed the DNS Updater on my corporate PC. So whenever i connect my PC to corporate network, it used to throw the same error that "Your IP was taken by another user"
People in my family were still able to access Youtube even with the Router having the Name Server IP's. I had to refresh my network every time from the Umbrella dashboard. So i uninstalled the Open DNS Updater from my PC and rebooted the router. Post observing for 6 hours i found that my people were not able to access YouTube this time and the Umbrella showed my IP as active.
If you have Open DNS Updater application on a PC which connects to Different Networks like from Home, Corporate and Public. That is when it gives the error.
The Error you receive on this Application automatically sets the Configured Network IP address as "Inactive" on the Open DNS Umbrella on Web.
I uninstalled it from my pc and observed for 2 days and i never had the problem again even though after sudden power cuts at my home :)
Just try.. i am not a geek but i would rate myself at number 4 when it comes to technology.

Yes, in this scenario you should not be installing and running this OpenDNS Updater on this PC. It cannot handle such a scenario. You better use https://updater.marc-hoersken.de/ or a built-in one on your router, NAS, DVR, IP camera, etc.
