I see where to input the two DNS addresses in the static DNS 1 & 2 fields, but how does the router broadcast my account information so the Open DNS servers knows to apply my account settings? Does it use something similar to the Open DNS updater that an individual computer uses?

"I see where to input the two DNS addresses in the static DNS 1 & 2 fields"

But you also see a DNS 3 field. Fill this with one of 208.67.222.220 or 208.67.220.222.

"how does the router broadcast my account information so the Open DNS servers knows to apply my account settings?"

It doesn't at all, anyway. The only information update which is sent to OpenDNS is your IP address information. And this is something your router can't do. You have the following options:

    • Flush your router with an alternative firmware like Tomato, OpenWRT, DD-WRT, etc. With such a firmware you can perform the update function, or
    • Run an Updater software on a computer within your network which is permanently switched on.

Thanks rotblitz. I'll just leave the one computer on then.

I forgot to ask, since I have the two Open DNS addresses in the first two DNS fields on the router already, why enter one of the same two DNS addresses again in the third field?  Is this just for redundancy? Thanks again.

It's not the same two DNS addresses, look closer. These are different, but have the same function and purpose.

No, it is for reliability. Else your router will cause to use also your ISP's DNS service, and your OpenDNS settings will take effect only randomly. This is the common experience made with any Linksys routers having three DNS server entries.

    Hi,

Please try the following IP addresses:

    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
208.67.220.222 <- Make sure not to duplicate an address. (208.67.222.220 is also valid if you need a fourth address.)
