Can I connect another router to my Brighthouse router and configure OpenDNS

Hi folks,

We recently switched to Brighthouse and apparently they do not allow any config on their wireless router, an Arris TG1862.  I am wondering if anyone has successfully added another router to their Brighthouse router so that they can use that router to configure the opendns DNS Servers?  If so, please feel free to share the wireless router that worked successfully for you.

  I don't know what country Brighthouse operates in, but the model of router won't matter, either it will work or not.

  Some ISP's don't allow configurations on the modem/routers that they provide, or ignore some of the changes you set, but they don't actually put any restrictions on your internet traffic, so getting your own router and putting it behind theirs should work fine.

  There are others who put a number of restrictions on the internet connections, including intercepting all DNS traffic or blocking all traffic to servers other than theirs. Sometimes that's implemented on their network or on their router, but in either case having your own router won't help you.

  You might be able to get around whatever restrictions they've put in place (or at least restrictions on DNS) by implementing DNSCrypt, but I'd suggest your own router first.

  In fact, for a number of reasons, not just restrictions on OpenDNS, I recommend your own router, regardless of what your ISP provides you.

  Were you successful with this?  I'd like to add a different router to our Brighthouse router/modem, model DG1670A.  There is a Parental Control Monitor that I would like to try, which will work with OpenDNS, but I would like to know if you were successful before I order it.  Thanks!

  Yes, I was successful in connecting a wireless router to my brighthouse modem.  I used a TP-LINK AC1900 Wireless Wi-Fi Dual Band AC Router.

  Yes, I have opendns configured using that router.  I did need to use the OpenDNSUpdater on one of my PC's.  I have no issues streaming video content.  We are streaming video to an Xbox One and it works great.  As an FYI, I do have a 200 Mbps package with Brighthouse, so your mileage may vary if you have a slower package.  :-)
