Block sites that are not that are not present in your database

And how to deal with the many many domains that are not categorized, but are part of categorized domains, especially sites using CDNs of any kind, therefore all major sites? Are you even aware of this fact?

Do you want to be provided with examples?

Would you really accept these sites to be half broken? I'm sure you would be one of the first coming up to complain, saying: "Well, I have opted to get non-categorized sites blocked, not categorized sites. But the categorized site example.com just shows rudimentary text, no formatting, no pictures, far from showing videos and other flashes.  And I can't perform this and that action at all.  Without OpenDNS I do not have any problems. Why do you do it so bad, OpenDNS?".

    LOL.

Glad I made you laugh. I am very aware of the fact that there are tons of websites with CDNs. Although I see your argument, it is in no way different than the current functionality. Lets use Bing video search for example. What happens when there's an explicit video as a part of your search results? Does the Bing video site become blocked? Nope, OpenDNS simply does what it's designed to do and that is to block the embedded content, displays it's banner and makes it clear what the reason is. Use that same principal for uncategorized domains. I know the result may not be pretty, but neither is the OpenDNS blocked web page.

This feature shouldn't be selected by default but simply as an option. I know I'd use it and based on other comments, looks like others would too.

LOL (laughing with you, not at you) :)

I would love to have a "block uncategorized sites" option.

It could be disabled by default, so the user would have to purposely check that as an option.   Yes, brand new or smaller less-known sites may be blocked, but as a user I'd rather have that then potential new malware sites being available simply because they haven't been flagged by OpenDNS yet.

Hackers use automated processes to stand up new domains quickly and then use the domains as malware sites.  These sites/domains are often abandoned long before they could ever be categorized.  I highly recommend the adding the option to block "Uncategorized" domains to the list of Custom settings.

This feature should be here already considering other web filtering solutions already have them. Obviously it should not be turned on by default, but it should be available as an option at least so for those who want it can have it and for those that don't then they can leave it off.

It's been 6+ months since this suggestion was placed here, and no weigh-in from OpenDNS staff. That tells me nothing will come of all the chatter here for what should be a simple implementation.

Sadly, that seems to be the course for all suggestions on this board. If you need troubleshooting assistance, fine... but change the existing system... don't count on a response.

This is sad considering some of us pay for this service. Might think about changing that.

    Another idea...

I think that you can add a special button in the "blocked-website.com" page when there is an "Uncategorize" category.

This button send a message and add a specific website in a separate list. From this list OpenDNS users can select the right category and then vote for it (Pending approval).

What do you think about that?

    A bad idea.

"add a special button in the "blocked-website.com" page when there is an "Uncategorize" category."

This cannot happen.  A block page cannot come up at all unless you blacklisted the domain individually.  Or didn't I understand right?

This is badly needed improvement for OpenDNS. I'm curious why the company is not taking actions?!

Most likely never.  This is covered with the whitelist-only mode of OpenDNS VIP already.  No need to invent another wheel again.

rotblitz - if the whitelist feature allowed us to enter categories I would agree with you.  However the last time I looked it only allowed us to enter single sites/domains.

I may be missing something, so if you know how to whitelist by category please share.

    Thanks.

Yes, white list does not solve the problem. I pay for OpenDNS to protect my family, if there was an uncategorized option that I could select that would allow for an extra level of protection. That is all we are asking for.

+32,000 of my users need this for uncategorized click through warning message.  Message would have a link to our policies.

I think what this person is trying to say is have the *option* to block un-categorized sites. I think it's a brilliant idea.

It's been such a long time since this was suggested. Originally I used to use K9 Web Protection which also offers this feature however K9 and OpenDNS kept conflicting with each other so I decided to stick with OpenDNS instead. I'm disappointed that this feature is still not yet available. I'm not sure why it's taking so long - maybe they don't know how to do it?

The idea seems easy but in reality it looks like it may be difficult to implement. Oh well, I guess all we can do is wait.

Did you read the voting for this?       32 people like this

This is 32 people out of more than 50 millions OpenDNS users.  Did you calculate the percentage?  This is like zero...
As if the idea would never have been raised...

"This is 32 people out of more than 50 millions OpenDNS users.  Did you calculate the percentage?  This is like zero..."

You should realize that a VERY low percentage of OpenDNS users use this forum at all.  That being said, this is the 7th most popular topic on the OpenDNS forum, so yeah, I think it is an important topic.

"You should realize that a VERY low percentage of OpenDNS users use this forum at all."

A good point!  But the same very low percentage of OpenDNS users will use this feature, because they will not really become aware of it, or they simply don't intend to use it.

Btw, to avoid confusion, I'm not against the idea and an option to block all uncategorized domains as long as it's not default, expect maybe for FamilyShield.  Why not!  But I for myself wouldn't most likely use it.
Therefore this idea got my vote too, and 34 people like this now.

Yea, why not block sites until they are categorized? Would make using the dashboard that much easier.

I am going to say I love this idea...  I know it does cause a hassle being a Site owner myself I had to get my site classified as quickly as possible at Mcafee for those business users that I wanted to see my site quickly.  (Most Enterprises actually check the Category off!)  However as a Parent who worries about content on the internet the idea is great!  Voted +1

I voted for this more as a parent. I don't think that companies would use this. School might use it. But as a parent with teenagers, protecting them is important. Yes no many users use this forum. Mostly because they don't even realize it is there. Most users set it up and just leave it. I am a paying user and I would love to see this added. True, it may never get added, but I won't stop trying.

It is a great idea and i have no problem at all with the possibility that my 8 and 10.year might not be able to see some new shopping site that someone just developed. These movie sites that keep changing urls to avoid being categorized is a huge problem for me because i do not want my kids on them. I would pay big money if opendns offered the option of blocking uncategorized sites.

Alternative you could pay for VIP Home, set everything to blocked, then whitelist only what you want to allow through.
