What exactly seemed like a good idea and what did you download? Which OpenDNS product are you trying to use? The free product (which is for "home users"), Umbrella, or one of the other paid products?

The free product does not need any software installed anywhere in order to work. It protects all devices on a specific "network" that are configured to use OpenDNS. That configuration can happen at the router level (usually the best way) or by devices that are individually configured to use OpenDNS.

There is an option when using Umbrella to install a small agent on some types of devices, but that's only needed if a device is taken off of the "home network" or some specific features are needed. The agent isn't needed for Umbrella to function however.
