This has almost nothing to do with the internet service provider, but with their supplied trimmed down devices. Simply flash those with the OEM firmware or an alternative firmware, or get another device (router/modem) from a store or so, and you should be out of the jail. You may lose special ISP services like VoIP or IPTV with this modification though, so inform yourself before about this.

    Thank you for that.

'Simply flash those with the OEM firmware or an alternative firmware' this may be simple for you but I do not feel confident in doing this and do not want to end up without a working internet connection. Can you recommend an idiot's guide? Looking at previous postings I get the impression that this is not a simple process and that people continue to have problems.

I would happily buy a (recommended) new box if it would allow me to use OpenDNS.

The best recommendation for an "idiot" is to get professional or otherwise knowledged help onsite, really. Then this one is in charge for any mistakes or failures which could happen, but most likely do not happen then.

    Thank you for that but.....

I am considering swapping to BT - can anyone give me any confidence that openDNS works easily with BT or are there similar problems with their modems?

What broadband provider do people recommend that will easily run openDNS?

Well, no personal experience with BT (I'm in Germany), but there are no good messages about it. Their trimmed down devices have the same problem...

Have used Open DNS for at least ten years as VM customer. I simply put their hub in bridge mode and attached an Apple Airport Extreme. That modem is extremely easy to configure and I took no more than 2 minutes to setup OpenDNS. I am on 100Mbps and it's rock solid. VM is pushing up their prices again in November. I may threaten to leave again as home broadband is becoming unwarrantedly expensive.
