Verizon DSL does not permit OpenDNS as primary DNS ??
I have Verizon DSL at home in Manhattan, NYC. It's been pretty good the last year or so.
Here's the issue: I set my wi-fi router (Actiontec GT784WN-VZ-1.1.6) to use OpenDNS as its primary DNS source. (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220). And, yes the router shows the two OpenDNS URLs as DNS Addresses #1 and #2 in its Gateway Parameter page. And the test page at OpenDNS indicates it is working.
However, if I run a Verizon HSI Field Ping Test (which gathers info from the Verizon CO and my DSL circuit), it says:
[08/25/13 16:11:40] PPP Peer IPv4 Address is [my IP - deleted here]
[08/25/13 16:11:40] PPP Peer IPv4 Address Mask is none
[08/25/13 16:11:40] PPP Peer IPv4 Primary DNS is 68.237.161.12
[08/25/13 16:11:40] PPP Peer IPv4 Secondary DNS is -
[08/25/13 16:11:40] PPP Peer IPv4 Primary WINS is -
[08/25/13 16:11:40] PPP Peer IPv4 Secondary WINS is 71.243.0.12
Well, those last two are NOT OpenDNS. So, what's the story? What are the URL-IPs above in the Vz HSI Field Ping Test as "Primary DNS" and "Secondary WINS"? Is there a way to make them the OpenDNS URLs instead? Thanks.

Mr. Rotblitz - I get the following Non-authoritative answer: which.opendns.com text = "1.nyc" Well, that looks good, even if it is "Non-authoritative". Are you confident that Verizon's choice of Primary DNS in its external CO circuit does NOT override my choice of OpenDNS in my router? Thanks. -
As long as that nslookup command comes back with the OpenDNS location (New York City in your case), and as long as http://welcome.opendns.com/ indicates that you're using OpenDNS, you can be confident that your ISP's DNS service is not in effect.
"even if it is "Non-authoritative"."
All OpenDNS responses are non-authoritative, because OpenDNS is a recursive DNS service, same as your ISP's, not an (authoritative) DNS hosting service. If you ever get an authoritative response from OpenDNS, something is incredibly wrong...

Yes, http://welcome.opendns.com/ shows that I'm using OpenDNS. All seems good. Please just keep an eye out to make sure Verizon and the others don't suddenly interfere in future. Thanks.
