Why do I have no Stats?

Monthly? Last I knew it was every two weeks. Regardless,  all other things correctly configured as you note, you should see stats in 3-24 hours after you first checked your (empty) stats. If it has been more than 24 hours, open a support ticket so the engineers can have a prod at your account.

As maintenance recommended please open a support ticket, we would be happy to take a look.

Thanks to you both. The stats are appearing now. Evidently OpenDNS had stopped saving any stats because I hadn't checked them in a long time. At this time there are no stats for 11/6 and previous. But I see activity beginning at 17:00 on 11/7, about an hour after I posted the original question here. So apparently my checking stats turned things back on. The Knowledge base has an article that says, "If you are using OpenDNS Basic, you must run a report for each network on a monthly or more frequently basis.  OpenDNS ceases to store data for free accounts if the OpenDNS administrator does not generate a report for a  period of time greater than a month."

Hm. I don't find a reference to this anywhere either. Not anymore.

Your stats shouldn't stop working because you haven't checked them in a long time, stats should go back 14 days with OpenDNS Home Basic accounts. However, what probably happened is your IP address had not updated correctly, so it stopped the stats for that time period. Of course, I am only making an educated guess, if the issue continues please let us know so we can take a look.

Just throwing this out there: Previous known behavior was for stats to stop collecting (and be purged) if they had not been accessed for some (indeterminate) time greater than 2 weeks for free accounts. Is this not, then, the case?

@maintenance You're correct. I thought we had changed this process a little while ago, but after further research I have found out that we still disable stats on free accounts,  if you have not logged into your account for a certain duration of time.

While my immediate problem appears to be resolved, your comments have raised my interest again. CertainIy I can make it a point to log into my own account at least monthly. But I have set up OpenDNS for a few other users, all of whom are non-technical. I did it primarily for their protection, but one of them has had a problem with a relative misusing the computer. So in that case I might need to check their stats, but certainly not every month. Maybe once a year or so, like whenever the relative visits. I suppose that disabling and purging stats might have originally been implemented to save server space. But in this case, it removes the benefit of having a history on the rare occasions when it could be useful. I suggest that it would be real helpful to keep the past week or so of stats, even if no one has logged into the account recently. I'm not running a business where I'd be checking several accounts. I'm just a retired IT guy with the usual following of people who need help. So here's one vote for changing the process.

No problem, simply upgrade to OpenDNS Home VIP.  This stores your stats for a year, no matter if you login or not.

Would not running an automated job every fortnight (with, e.g., fetchstats) to get a page of the stats keep them alive? Or must the web interface be used?

Either way, I can see why OpenDNS is not going to keep every user's stats forever for free. This ends up being a lot of unused data stored to no purpose, at a fair cost for no return.

    Certainly!

Correct, running an automated script to fetch stats would work too.

    Hi,

I just signed up for Home VIP. I've confirmed I'm using the OpenDNS  servers as when I check, I see the big orange check mark on the confirmation page  http://www.opendns.com/welcome/    There was mention in an earlier post in this thread that it takes several hours before stats logging begins? Is this correct? I've been browsing to various news sites to generate stats.

Thanks. I've been searching for a way to monitor which sites my son is visiting when he is "studying". I realize OpenDNS doesn't report the pages viewed but the domain names requested. Domain names are fine. My other option was something like an appliance that sits between the router and modem to monitor all Internet  traffic across the LAN and discern between web site visits, chats, etc..  In anycase I'll start off with OpenDNS to hopefully collect some info to start that conversation with him.

Update. I'm seeing stats now, about 1-1/2 hour after redirecting my modem to the OpenDNS DNS servers. Seems the domain name requests are collected then reported hourly. It's 7PM and I'm seeing stats reported for the 5PM period. Seems to be working now.

If I have had the free account for 4 months and upgrade to VIP now, will I be able to go back and access stats from previous to the last two weeks.

No, because your stats are no longer there, even not invisible.

@christineannolivas The VIP service offers a full year of stats recording, but this is enabled when the subscription starts. At that point will the stats start recording for the year. The system does not make your stats available prior to the subscription.

Re: "The system does not make your stats available prior to the subscription."

Are you saying that the basic acount gives the user no stats...no stats collected for basic users?

I just signed up with a basic account, two days ago, and do not get any domain name stats.  I see the graphs of the daily/hourly number of requests, but no domain name stats.

The free version offers 14 days of stats only vs. one year for VIP.

"I see the graphs of the daily/hourly number of requests, but no domain name stats."

Initially it takes at least 24 hours for stats to appear, and they may not appear all at once.  Going further it takes 1-3 hours to appear.  Stats are not real-time.
So please be patient and wait for another few hours, and you should see your domain stats too.

I've checked into your account cwsullivan and confirm activity on the account. If stats are enabled you should be seeing some on your Dashboard at this time and as Rotblitz mentioned, it can take some time for the first requests to appear in the stats.

Thank you, rotblitz and Alexander!  I am, now, seeing stats.  I'm not sure why, but shortly after I signed up for my account and configured my network (within an hour), I was seeing the domain name stats.  But, shortly after that, I purged the data, and it took more than 24 hours for the domain name stats to appear.  Everything seems to be working well, now.  Thanks guys!

"But, shortly after that, I purged the data"

Oops yes, this was a lousy idea!  The purging is scheduled and runs any time later where you least expect and want it.  I recommend to not use this function.

This was merely thought for data protection freaks who finally disabled stats and logs and wanted their remaining data purged forever.

I'm glad to see that stats is working for everyone. I will be marking this post as answered. Any other issues, please feel free to post a new topic or contact us at http://support.opendns.com.
