YouTube videos not playing suddenly
Suddenly YouTube videos will not play in my household. The YouTube website loads but videos won't play. Oddly enough, the ads will play at the start of the videos. I added YouTube to my whitelist but still nothing. When I bypass ODNS they play fine. I've had ODNS for years without this issue, I didn't touch my settings (until after this issue). Perplexed.

Your advice about looking in the blocked list yielded this r17---sn-p5q7ynle.googlevideo.com which was blocked 112 times. I can't believe I didn't catch that. Added to the whitelist and all is OK. Strange how that just happened out of the blue. Very much appreciate your help. Dan

And you don't have anything set for filtering which would include YouTube? Then adding youtube.com to a whitelist will not help.
Is your IP address updated with no error reported at your Dashboard or in the Updater? If an error exists, you may have inherited another user's settings and *maybe* they block something which would cripple youtube without you seeing a block page.
More likely I would think you are subject to some poor routing which increases latency too much for a video to load.
Please post the full output of these commands here(assuming Windows OS):
nslookup -type=txt debug.opendns.com.
tracert 208.67.220.220
tracert youtube.com
tracert ytimg.com
-
Filtering is limited, pornography being the main item.
No errors.

This problem is due to some domain which is needed for YouTube but is blocked by your settings. You'll have to check your domain stats for related domains which are blocked. We definitely can't know.
"Tracing route to ytimg.com [67.215.65.132]"
This is a non-issue. ytimg.com has not an A record, just subdomains of it have. See in your stats if subdomains of it are blocked, and if so, add ytimg.com to your never block list.
-
Excellent!
It may well be that this domain or subdomain was recently approved for another category which you have blocked, and this looks like it "just happened out of the blue". Just normal behavior if you block by categories. It can easily happen again for other sites and categories...
-
YouTube is Google. If you block search engines, you'll be impacting other Google services too. You have to explicitly whitelist a few domains then, e.g.:
googlevideo.com
gstatic.com
youtube.no-cookie.com
ytimg.comI don't know "radar maps", so cannot comment. But find related blocked domains here:
https://dashboard.opendns.com/stats/all/blockeddomains -
Hi Rotblitz...
so you're saying that there are more youtube domains than the ones you posted?
googlevideo.com
gstatic.com
youtube.no-cookie.com
ytimg.comby going in my dashboard, now I can i identiy which domains blocked belong to Youyube?
I stopped using Opendns Home a long time ago because of this issue with youtube.. once i started using Family Shield I haven't had any other issues with youtube.. but now I am of need to block all search engines except Google, so I went to my dashboard and only selected "search engines" to be blocked, but Youtube got messed up even after adding youtube.com to the whitelist.. I am going to try adding the other Youtube domains to see if that takes care of the problem.. anything else you can suggest I need to do to avoid having issues with youtube while using OpenDns home?..thank you.
-
"so you're saying that there are more youtube domains than the ones you posted?"
Most likely yes. Simply ask YouTube. Only they can know.
"by going in my dashboard, now I can i identiy which domains blocked belong to Youyube?"
Did you mean how can I identify which blocked domains belong to YouTube?
Beside the domains listed by me (and any subdomains of those) it may be hard to find out, but generally all Google, YouTube and CDN domains can belong to YouTube as a website. To definitely find out, you had to run a DNS query sniffer like http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/dns_query_sniffer.html while surfing YouTube.
-
Great..
Yes, I did mean "how can I identify which blocked domains belong to YouTube? - I couldn't fix it as there is no edit feature avaliable :(
but thanks Rotblitz..I will give that a try.
I wonder how regular folks like myself who use OpenDns Home deal with this as Youtube is blocked?.. It's been years since this issue has been going on with OpenDns and youtube..
-
"I wonder how regular folks like myself who use OpenDns Home deal with this as Youtube is blocked?.."
They may have less blocking configured in general? YouTube isn't blocked by OpenDNS, just by each users individual settings. You really get what you configure! Promised!
"It's been years since this issue has been going on with OpenDns and youtube.. "
I'm using OpenDNS since 2007, and I was not aware of a general problem in this area. I would say: there are no issues, just user errors.
-
I started using OpenDns home again and only selected "search engines" to be blocked.. then I added google.com and youtube.com to the whitelist.. only google works...but Youtube opens, but it looks really bad and any smartphone connected to wifi cannot use the youtube app as it say "connection failed".
I've flushed dns and cleared the cache and history, rebooted the router, like I always do...but nothing.. .Youyube is unusuable... I can't understand why it would be blocked when the only thing I selected in settings is search engines.
-
well, now that I think of it.. I still have the Family Filter IP on the router.. 208.67-222-123 - 208.67.220.123.. I left that one because I was told that I could use Family filter along with the dash settings.. do you think that might be the reason youtube is block..I wouldn't think so because I never had an issue with Family Filter before and youtube...but maybe 208..67.222.123 IP causes an issue if using the dashboard/?
-
@magdiel1975
You should be able to use the FamilyShield resolvers (208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123) with your Network based filtering without a problem. However, it doesn't look like you have a registered network, so you might be inheriting someone else's filtering settings. You may want to open a ticket with the results of the diagnostic tool so that we can identify how you're being filtered, and fix it. -
You might still be inheriting someone else's filtering settings then; if you're being filtered but don't have a registered network, you could have the IP address of a network that was registered by another user, but is no longer theirs, and so you're picking up their Policy. The best way to handle this is to open a ticket with your IP address so that we can clear it from the backend systems and let you use it.
-
Im sorry, what I meant was.. once I noticed that adding my network to my dashboard settings caused and even though I ONLY selected search engines to be blocked, Youtube stopped working, so I ended up removing the network from my dashboard so I can use Youtube again.. and it did... so right now the only filtering at the router level is Family Shield which does not have any issues with Youtube.
-
"I ONLY selected search engines to be blocked"
And this means you selected a category of domains which are tagged as Search Engines. And because YouTube is Google, you will necessarily be impacting YouTube by selecting the Search Engines category. Google's (= YouTube's) DNS configuration is not granular enough to completely match any categorization.
Therefore again, as already said above:
You must add at least the domains listed above to your "never block" list. I gave you advice how to find out possible other domains needed to be whitelisted, with a DNS query sniffer or by visiting your blocked domain stats at https://dashboard.opendns.com/stats/all/blockeddomains or also e.g. by looking at the HTML source of the web pages in question.
Did you do anything of this already? Most likely not, but there is no other way. Or do you expect us other users to perform these investigations for you? Also, regarding being filtered by someone else's settings, execute this diagnostic command to see if your IP address is registered with OpenDNS:
nslookup -type=txt debug.opendns.com.
-
Yup, I did add those domains to "never block" - Now, Youtube pulls on the computer, but the Youtube app does not work on any of the smartphones or smart TVs as I keep getting "no connection, please check your network". I have cleared the cache on the smart device, but it still doesn't work.
My son who uses snapchat app says the app doesn't work on his phone, but it does on his computer :(. At first snapchat was being blocked as it was listed under social networking/texting, etc.. which is strange because I was not blocking ANY social media, unless selecting "search engines" would also apply to social media.
"Did you do anything of this already?"
yep, I did, but I get a message saying I didn't have enough data collected or something along those lines.
"nslookup -type=txt debug.opendns.com"
I will try this when I get home.
-
@Rotblitz..
I ran the command..here's what I got...
opendnscommand.JPG -
@magdiel1975
It's likely googlevideo.com, which we've tagged as "Search Engines": https://domain.opendns.com/googlevideo.com -
I have these as NEVER BLOCK:
google.com googlevideo.com gstatic.com snapchat.com www.youtube.com youtu.be youtube-ui.l.google.com youtube.com youtube.no-cookie.com ytimg.com -
Well, of the domains not in your never block list that also show up in your blocked domains log because they're Search Engines, the domains near the top that are still blocked are www.yahoo.com and apple-mobile.query.yahooapis.com. I'm not sure why these domains would interact with Snapchat, but they may be used as authentication or validation domains.
-
so if I whitelist those from Yahoo..does it mean that www.yahoo.com would be unblocked...I ask because I do not want yahoo to be accessible as a search option.. I only want google search the only option.
-
ok..
This one feelinsonice-hrd.appspot.com unblocked snapchat.
Question...
I use Family Shield 208.67.222.123 - 208.67.220.123.. if I don't use the IP updater, does that mean that whenever my IP changes, I will continue to be filtered, but only the categories set for Family Shield, but the Dashboard settings wont' be applied, correct?
-
That's correct. Using the FamilyShield DNS servers will ensure that you're always blocked from the FamilyShield categories (Tasteless, Proxy/Anonymizer, Sexuality, and Pornography), but if your IP address changes and we can't match it to your network, then we can't apply your network's filtering policies, only the FamilyShield restrictions.
