Does your iPad use OpenDNS at all?  Visit http://welcome.opendns.com/ with your iPad to check it.

"Does anyone know how to block all YouTube videos through the iPads?"

Look at https://dashboard.opendns.com/stats/all/topdomains to possibly find related domains which may need to be blocked.

As of April 9th 2014 - this still isn't working.  The YouTube website and any sub domains are blocked in Safari on a iPad - but the app doesn't get blocked.  What the hell?!

    Hello,

After further researching this issue, try blacklisting ytimg.l.google.com and ytimg.com. Reboot the iPad and see if this blocks the connection for the app. Let us know how this works for you.

    Best regards,

    Anthony

Thanks Anthony, I've just seen your reply. It's school  holidays, 7:45am and I'm at work. I've made the OpenDNS setting changes so as soon as my wife wakes up I'll get her to reboot the kid's iPads and report back.

    ...fingers crossed!

    Hi All,

Thanks Anthony, unfortunately blacklisting ytimg.I.google.com and ytimg.com only blocking thumbnails so no images in video list, you can still watch the videos. Obviously youtube app using other domain and I've tried to find out which domain by looking at opendns log but no luck yet.

    Best Regards,

    Norman

Just adding that I am facing this issue too. I am not sure how the Youtube application on the Ipad is accessing the video content but it is completely bypassing OpenDNS.

This means that it is either accessing Youtube video content by IP address, or it is using a domain name that we haven't seen before. Checking the logs however, and I am not seeing any unusual domain names.

It would be great to find out the IP addresses that are being used because then we might be able to block them at the router.

I was able to block it by blocking the following domains: youtube.com, l.google.com and googlevideo.com

Not sure if they are all needed, to lazy to test. Keep in mind that it takes a while for your changes to become active. I would suggest to wait 5 mins after you make the change, then power off/on the ipad and then try again.

    Thanks robvb,

I've made the setting changes and I'll try the iPads tonight to see if they've still got access.
