Where is the "user utility" to bypass on Mac OS? Also Linux?

I would expect the User Utility to be found here: http://netgear.com/lpc
It should be part of that package.

Yes, I expected that too.  But the program you download does not appear to contain any way to log in with a bypass.

Can somebody tell me if this is supported for a Mac or not?

You can use the Netgear Genie to log into your bypasses with your MAC and other devices however it does not appear Linux is currently supported: http://www.netgear.com/landing/genie/

It seems there are two downloads available.  The older 'LPCManager' will not recognize my Netgear router.  The newer "Netgear Genie' does, and when I go through the setup dialogue I get to a screen with buttons saying:

     - disable live parental controls

    - change basic settings

    - change custom settings

    - refresh

This does NOT have a 'bypass' button like the one I see on the iPad utility.

Please, folks, don't try to guess unless you are a Mac user or know about the Mac Genie.  Is there anyone here who has actually used Netgear Genie on a Mac to bypass, and if so, could they please tell me how to navigate to it.  Otherwise I'll be stuck tethering on a mobile phone any time I have to work late....

The Netgear Genie app is supported by Netgear, so if you need assistance guiding through it you can contact them here: http://support.netgear.com/general/contact/default.aspx

According to their FAQs here: http://www.netgear.com/landing/genie/faq.aspx

    Question #5:

I have set up Parental Controls for my network, is there any way I can bypass Parental Controls on my iOS and Android devices?

Answer: Yes. We have added bypass account for Parental Controls in the latest iOS and Android NETGEAR genie. Download or update to the latest NETGEAR genie, and you'll be able to log in with your bypass account in the Parental Controls screen.

-->Doesn't explicitly mention bypass with Mac but I'm imagining if the bypass button exists for these devices it should for Mac.

According to page 22 of the Genie Manual there should be a Parental Controls button in the desktop app as well: http://www.netgear.com/assets/landing/genie/GenieAppsUserManual_12Sep12.pdf

Kristy, thank you for this.  Netgear's site points people to this forum for support, which is why I posted here and I presumed some of their staff would be active on this forum.     In any event, I am pretty sure that they simply have not included the bypass feature in Netgear Genie for Mac, but if I find I am wrong I'll post an update here.

Best wishes for Christmas and New Year, and many thanks for a fantastic product...

I have encountered the same issue. No bypass feature in Netgear Genie for Mac. If anyone has a solution, I would like to know how to do this.

I am running Mavericks OS X 10.9.1 and the netgear genie does not have a bypass feature and LPCmanager doesn't recognize my Netgear router.  Hope this is figured out soon.

Am I just missing something or am I asking the same question that you're all asking?  I set up the user accounts on my desktop, loaded the Genie to my phone, and my husband's phone.  Now there seems to be no way for his kids to access their bypass accounts from their phones.  Is that right?  That kind of makes the purchase of a $200 router a waste of money.  Since I can't change the name from "admin," I guess the next step would be to return the router unless there's another solution.

Same for me.  My PC has a Bypass Login button on Parental Control Status.  My Mac (Mavericks) with the latest Genie for Mac does not have that button.

Please fix this, Open DNS is causing my work login via VPN to fail for some reason.  Turning off Open DNS allows it to work, but I don't want to have to turn it off and on all the time.  I should be able to just bypass it on my work computer.

"Open DNS is causing my work login via VPN to fail for some reason."

Does your Advanced Settings doesn't have a VPN exceptions section where you can add your VPN names?

@rotblitz for what it's worth I ran into exactly the same issue a few days ago. Seems like I've gone through all the same steps you have too. I have a friend on my street who set this up some time ago and has it working. He's probably got older versions of the software I guess. He's sending me a copy of the Mac software he uses to log in to bypass account on Mac. I'll let you know how it works out.

Does Netgear allow users to log bugs on them somewhere? This doesn't really seem like a question or a request for support but more like a bug in their software (or documentation)?

Sorry, no, I do not have problems with LPC.  I just tried to help other users.

You may be totally right that the older software "Management Utility" was able to help here, because Netgear Genie doesn't seem to support it yet.  It seems the older software is still available at http://countries.netgear.com/lpc

Regarding Netgear support, see the link posted above by Kristy.

@rotblitz - The VPN issue was a separate thing, not related to OpenDNS after all.  It turns out I had to "allow pings from the internet" in a setting in my Netgear router which allowed VPN to work fully for my work applications.  Apparently my older linksys router was allowing that by default.

So, it's a non-issue for me now.  Thanks for your help.

Ah, I see.  BS happens if people fill threads with off-topic stuff.  This thread is clearly about the LPC user utility for Mac OSX, not about VPN issues.

l0k mixed up both into one message.  :(
And I was stupid enough to respond to this part.

OK... I have an iMac running 10.6.8 (yes... I know.. I need an upgrade) and a R7000 .... I had installed the old user utility on my PC and that worked... so I changed the link to say mac instead of windows here: http://www.opendns.com/download/mac/netgear-userutility and that downloaded a working user utility that does fine with my R7000 on my Mac.... the first time, you need to log into the router to get the user accounts list... but then it seems to be limited to just the users you want in there. good luck

I happened upon the exact same solution as mgazzillo.  On this page, it pointed me towards the windows version: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20079

So I just changed "windows" to "mac" et voila!  Works on my R6200.

@rotblitz sorry I my previous comment was meant for @captainrobbo and not you. @mgazzilo thanks for the pointer. That works for my mac too. My friend also gave me the exact same file too (same version number and byte size at least). Now I only have problems with iPhone (started a new thread for this) and I just need netgear to enhance the scheduling to allow a different schedule on different days so that kids get less restrictions on weekends. I can dream I guess. Looking at alternatives to netgear. Will probably still use opendns though!

    Hi,

Yes, this URL appears to have all the info you need (http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20079) but it has omitted the OSX link.

I also used the download from (http://www.opendns.com/download/mac/netgear-userutility) and it works fine on Mavericks. The only issue is that every time you start the app you need to enter the Admin password first. The windows version remembers that password - which means mum or dad don't need to log in first...

I still cannot find an iPad equivalent. Netgear Genie is all they ship but the problem with that is you need to log in as Admin first and the "Disable Parental Controls" button is there for my kids to press....

My takeaway is the Parental Controls feature is great but at the moment it is incompletely implemented for non-Windows users.

... and any solution in today's homes which only supports Windows won't cut it. I have iPads, kindles, smart tvs, etc. Most homes will have something which is non-windows. LPC is not a good solution by design, it is poorly implemented, buggy and badly supported.

I'm taking a serious look at Skydog. Now that costs money but it does look like a professional solution.

Only Windows is supported for Bypass Accounts.

I submitted a support ticket to NetGear about the Mac and iDevice support. Their response follows:

The Bypass utility is only supported by Windows computers. No downloadable bypass utility is available for Mac Computers. Furthermore, only one computer is allowed to bypass the Parental Controls, so you will not be able to select devices which will be immune to the filtering.

If you find it compromising to not be able use some of your devices, I would suggest to disable your Live Parental Controls and configure Blocked Services and schedules on the router instead, where you can set schedules for Internet usage on specific devices using their IP addresses.

To configure Blocked Services, please click this link:

Set Up a NETGEAR Router to Block Access to Certain Websites
    http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20483/~/set-up-a-netgear-router-to-block-access-to-certain-websites

    Thank you for choosing NETGEAR.

I don't think that Netgear person knows what they're talking about, or they're giving out simplified information that doesn't really capture the truth. As a few ofbus have said, there is a Mac download, but it's not linked to directly anywhere. It may not technically be "supported" in that they aren't trying to help you do it, but it most certainly can be done.

As for more than one device at a time, I haven't tested more than one computer but I have used multiple devices with bypasses and that doesn't seem to be a problem.

FYI if you go here http://www.netgear.com/home/discover/apps/genie.aspx  there is a Mac Download button where you can use the bypass account feature on a Mac.  However, as of today, if you have an issue downloading/installing it on your mac you will need to download it with a Windows machine first and then copy it over to your Mac to install it.

everything works with your explanation. it seems there is smth wrong with certificate of NetgearGenie App, when i've downloaded it through my Mac - it said "package corrupted" (i've tried a lot of version from different sites like cnet.com e t.c. - always the same results with "package corrupted").

download through windows PC helped and it works now, there is "bypass account" button and this button works as well

I am having the same problem described earlier in this forum about the Netgear Genie utility which comes from the Mac download (that's what I get at the link posted by rotblitz on 23Feb) lacking any functionality to log into your bypass acct.  I tried getting on my Windoz machine and downloading the mac software with it, found that cksum for the .dmg file was the same as what I had already downloaded and installed on my Mac, so no joy.

This is something for Netgear support.  OpenDNS do not issue the Genie program.

The problem i have found with the NETGEAR is that if one enables a bypass on a computer, every user get that some access. this is very different than how it use to work with LPC User Utility - totally broke

sorry typed too fast.... i meant comparing the new NETGEAR Genie tool vs the older LPC User Utility. the Genie tool will unlock the whole system for all users if you enable a bypass account. not good for a home PC with multi user accounts.
