Live Parent Controls not working with iPhone

Do your iPhones connect to the internet through the Netgear router, or do they use mobile phone connectivity like GPRS, UMTS or LTE?  LPC is in effect only if using your Netgear router, of course.

Also, did you configure your bypass accounts correctly, if at all?

What message shows up if you visit http://welcome.opendns.com/ with the devices?

Yes, the iPhones are using the same wifi network as the mac. No usable cell phone data signal in my rural location unfortunately. Plenty of tractors though ;-) Bypass accounts work from the mac and my ipad (the same bypass accounts). Visiting http://welcome.opendns.com shows an opendns welcome screen on both devices. I guess this shows that both devices are using opendns?

"I guess this shows that both devices are using opendns?"

Yes, exactly this.  This is the prerequisite for anything else.  If your bypass accounts work with an iPad, they should work with iPhone too, because both have the same operating system iOS.

I too am experiencing the same problem with my son's iPhone 4. We have multiple computers/devices/phones and everything is working perfectly on those devices except my son's iPhone. It seems to bypass the parental controls completely...

I've rebooted router, rebooted phone, removed networks on iPhone and configured again...nothing I do affects the iPhone...he's able to get to Internet unrestricted...

And I know it's not accessing the Internet via the cell service because we have that blocked from the courier, which I tested and confirmed...

"It seems to bypass the parental controls completely..."

So, you're using a Netgear router with LPC enabled, do you?  If not, this section and thread are not for you.

"I've rebooted router, rebooted phone, removed networks"

This is useless, generally, wasting time.

But did you test also what I mentioned above?

Correct. I'm using a Netgear router WNDR4500v2 with Live Parental Controls enabled...

Going to http://welcome.opendns.com produces the following results on multiple devices, including iPhone (where it seems to bypass controls and access any website)

    "Welcome to OpenDNS"

"Your Internet is safer, faster, and smarter because you're using OpenDNS. Thank you!"

Great, then it should block things also on the iPhone where it seems to bypass the controls.  Ensure that there are no DNS server addresses configured on it beside either the router's IP address alone or the OpenDNS resolver addresses.

If you're still facing problems with content filtering on this iPhone, better open a support ticket.  Staff may need to look into your account to see if your iPhone is possibly handled as a bypass account for whatever reason, or what else the problem may be.

On PC - Bypass (account 1) = Everything works fine.

On iPhone I have Genie App - Bypass (account 1) does not work nor Bypass2 (account 2 - no other user).

When select either Bypass account --> Login Window --> Can enter anything here as the password (including real one) --> Press Login = "Please wait window" --> Returns back to select Bypass account window.

The effect of the above is that nothing has happened neither Bypass account can be Logged in to.

    Am I missing something?

You'll want to refer to Netgear support.  The Genie program/app is not from OpenDNS.

    Hi

Im afraid I can not add anything useful, but can say that I have seen this on My android phone too. I called it a "golden ticket phone" For comparison I have an exact same model phone and that is being blocked.

The only thing I have not done is reset my phone, as there could be an app in the phone that supplies the "golden Ticket"

One other difference I have in the my phone is that it was rooted and the one that gets blocked was never rooted.

I no longer have the root, but unless I reflash the phone, there is always something left.

I know its a pain, but you could look at starting with a reset on the phone then load the apps one by one to see if one directs traffic.

One other thing that I have done in my router is I have blocked port53 so that a device can not change the DNS settings and bypass the router settings.

I was having this same issue on my iPhone.  Had to "Forget this Network" by going to Settings >> Wi-Fi >> <<your SSID Name>>.  Seems that some pages were being cached.  Now seems to be working.

I am also experiencing the same problem with my iPhone not being subjected to Parental Control filtering. Not impressed! When there is a solution - software upgrade -let me know

Because every device behind Netgear LPC works, the iPhone works too, and nothing needs to be fixed.  If it doesn't work on your iPhone, then it is likely something else.  I do not like to repeat me.  Simply work through all instructions provided above.

And an additional thing to check: ensure that you don't have a network defined at https://dashboard.opendns.com/settings/
If so, go ahead and straight delete it!  Your dashboard is only at https://netgear.opendns.com/

I too have this same problem on my son's iPhone 4. I ended up resetting his phone and reloaded his apps from scratch and everything is working as it should now...
