Try disabling your firewall. I got it to work that way but when you put the firewall back the PC's don't do what you set them to do.

Try logging in to the iPad app for netgear genie. This worked for me and I was then able to login to the windows genie version.

Have a C3700 and just spoke with Netgear support. Known issue parental controls not working and new firmware coming out Q3-2015 - What a joke.

You may be able to use the older LPC Management Utility from the links below on NETGEAR C3X00 devices; however, the Genie is confirmed to not work on these router-modems and are awaiting a patch from NETGEAR as you have confirmed.

    Mac LPC Manager: ftp://downloads.netgear.com/parentalcontrols/mac/LPCManager_v1.0.4.dmg

    Mac User Utility: ftp://downloads.netgear.com/parentalcontrols/LPCUserUtility.dmg

Windows User Utility and LPC Manager: http://opendns.com/downloads and download the "NETGEARManagementUtility-2.1.6-install" entry

I just LOVE buying a product that clearly states that it can do parental control features like scheduled internet availability... and it doesn't work!! That's the ONLY reason I bought this router!

**WORKAROUND FOUND!**  To implement scheduled internet availability, I setup a timer on my phone to remind me to walk over and hit the power button on my great new NetGear router with that awesome Net Genie software. To make this work, don't forget to also set a phone alarm to remind you to turn the power back on at some point. This works great!!! One downside is that it will disable the internet for everyone else in the household, including yourself. But, the rest of the family will understand and think you're a great guy for figuring this out.

Doing it manually?  You could easily automate this by a switch timer...

Some NETGEAR firmware also has a separate parent control feature which includes scheduled network shutoff; however, this is outside of the LPC settings. Note also that these are NETGEAR developed and NETGEAR support would be the place to contact for Genie related issues or lack of model support.

Same issue. Opened a support ticket on the 7th.... it's now the 11th and the status says it's still "Awaiting assignment to a support agent."

Also already made sure I had the current Firmware.

    Joy...

So fed-up with Netgear. They used to have good support once way back before it was all sent over to Indi or some such place. used to actually get hold of helpful folk who didn't follow the same script every time you chased up with a query on your outstanding call. My parental control issue has had them getting me to revert back to a basic Firmware, then running through about 3 updates before sending me a version that was in development. It also failed... They had me repeat all of this again with the same results, each time it gets escalated the new engineer gets me to do exactly the same process again.. I Wonder how they tested this to be brave enough to advertise the parental control and brag about it in their sales material. Someone said there will be a fix in FW update Q3 of 2015. I hope so because when I gave up with their support, that is exactly what they told me...A fix in a new firmware release 6 months down the line, that was nearly 2 years ago.

You don't need to use LPC at all.  You can get all of OpenDNS also with their normal Home version, even in addition with stats and logs.

Make sure you have an openDNS account. Then you need to add a network.

    Go to the link: https://login.opendns.com

Log on. Under the Settings tab, make sure you have a network added. This solved my problem.

""Log on. Under the Settings tab, make sure you have a network added."

This is totally wrong for Netgear LPC.  You must ensure that you don't have a network under https://dashboard.opendns.com/settings/
The LPC dashboard is only at https://netgear.opendns.com/

Hi there, I just bought a new netgear modem router D6300 with firmware version V1.0.0.90.  I want to set up parental control for this device, and I was told to download and install NETGEAR genie, so I did.  After great difficulty creating the free OpenDNS account, it wouldn't let me login.  It displays the message "There was an error signing in, please make sure you're connected to the Internet and try again."  I AM connected to the Internet, that's why I can post this in the forum.

I managed to logon directly to the openDNS site.  I have successfully added the network - still the same error message.

What else can I do?  I really just simply what parental control set-up for my household.  Nothing fancy, really.

Thanks for anyone who can help me!

"I managed to logon directly to the openDNS site.  I have successfully added the network"

Sad to see that you have problems with reading.  As I just said before, repeating for your convenience:

You must ensure that you don't have a network under https://dashboard.opendns.com/settings/
The LPC dashboard is only at https://netgear.opendns.com/

So, delete your network again!  If following the instructions at http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/25687/ doesn't help, you'll want to raise a support ticket with OpenDNS or Netgear.

Thank you, rotblitz, for repeating your post.  I'm sorry to make you sad that some people like me "have problems with reading".

I made sure that I don't have a network under https://dashboard.opendns.com/settings/  - yes, deleted my network, as you humbly advised.

It still didn't work for me (see attached file).  Yes, I will raise a support ticket with OpenDNS or Netgear, and hopefully get advice from someone else more understanding.  This is the first time I have posted something in a forum like this - and I did not expect to be humiliated and treated like an IDIOT!

"It still didn't work for me (see attached file)."

And this is when you get "There was an error signing in, please make sure you're connected to the Internet and try again."?

"hopefully get advice from someone else more understanding."

I have the understanding, but somebody must look at your account and/or your router which is obviously not what a user like me would be in a position to do...
It solely has to do with your account or router, very individual and very specific.

Btw, this has been reported more often.  See https://support.opendns.com/entries/33173850 and https://community.netgear.com/t5/Genie/There-was-an-error-signing-in-please-make-sure-you-re-connected/td-p/996591
But no definite solutions which these could offer... :(

And no, you're not an idiot at all!  Don't believe it!

Hey Lorne, I had this exact same issue when I got my NetGear router. I ended up having to open a support ticket, where they took me through all the things I had already tried and then finally gave me a link to download a special version of NetGear Genie which then worked. Once that one worked and did whatever it does, I was able to run the normal one and set things up on my other computers.

One would almost think they would just post a link and say... if this error occurs, download this special version to fix your issues.

Be aware that that link could be one that has already expired and no longer works, or could lead to a piece of software that fixes a specific issue that that user had that you don't, and that trying to use it could actually make your problem worse. Without more information, including information on what the behind the scene specific issues for that person and you are your best bet is to follow the instructions that OpenDNS has always given in these cases: open a support ticket with OpenDNS

    Hi everyone,

Sorry to hear that you are having issues signing in to OpenDNS using NETGEAR Genie. For users with this issue after October 21, 2015, please take a look at this article for details and updates: https://support.opendns.com/entries/97428617-Error-when-Logging-in-to-OpenDNS-with-NETGEAR-Genie

We are working with our engineers to resolve this issue. Thank you for your patience at this time.

Thanks Eden for the useful link.

My NetGenie suddenly stopped allowing me to access Parental Controls. It was previously working fine using TCP/IP V4 "Obtain DNS Server Address automatically" setting; now seems to require Open DNS preferred IP address set.  Once set to OpenDNS DNS IP addresses, it works.

I have a Netgear R7000. Updated Netgear Genie. It sees all my devices. When I click on Parental controls, it says " It looks like  you might not be connected to the internet through a supported router...."  Does the R7000 not support Netgear Genie? Is there another direction I should pursue?

    Your router supports Genie.  http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/24686/

"Is there another direction I should pursue?"

Sure, just read what has been written.  You'll find that you have to raise a support ticket.

If you have the same issue the solution would be the same solution that everyone else has been given. Namely, open a support ticket. Did you think you'd have the same issue but a different solution?

I have a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 (AC1900) router that is having issues with a couple old laptops. It seems like wifi works on my Vista machine until I put on the open dns parental controls. Then it will not work although my Apple laptop and iPhones/iPads still work.
    Any ideas?

Wondering what your question has to do with the topic "Error when login to OpenDNS via Netgear Genie".  Would you know?  Or would it be a better idea to open your own thread?
