A username comes (still and only) with grandfathered accounts from the first generation.  These can use either a username or the e-mail address.  The statement quoted by you is to reflect this.  Newer accounts can use only the e-mail address.  I do not think that Cisco/OpenDNS will reinvent what they removed years ago already.

"Life is strange" only if you are not aware of the backgrounds and the history.  Now you are!

I did use OpenDNS years ago, but financially had to drop it temporarily. Still, the announcement by the Justice Department about breaking into anybody's system they choose, only caused me to re-triple security efforts. Nothing to hide. But, nothing to see either. So, yeah, with my life, certainly Life Is Strange.

Thank you for the update. I have never forgotten the fine OpenDNS products...as talking about "Prosumer" obviously demonstrated. :)

    Thank you rotblitz.

Ah, a Prosumer/Umbrella user?  Well, in this case you have even more options like 2-step authentication or SAML authentication to improve safety and security for your account.  But still no username with these services, just e-mail address.  Umbrella has been launched after the usernames have been disabled for new accounts.
