Netgear's smartphone apps do not always work reliably.  You better download the Genie app to your computer by visiting https://www.netgear.com/home/discover/apps/lpc.aspx, scrolling to the end and selecting either "Download PC" or "Download Mac".

"I have everything else set up on OpenDNS"

Oops, this sounds bad!  You shouldn't have anything set up on OpenDNS.  If you want to use LPC, you had to undo what you did with OpenDNS before.  OpenDNS Home and Netgear LPC are incompatible services.  You can just use either the one or the other.

That’s great thanks, but I have followed your instructions and downloaded the app for PC, but when I try to turn on the control it asks me to use my Open DNS account... and then rejects my user name and password. Obviously I have the right details because I’m signed in here on my iPad 🙄. Why won’t the app accept it?

In fact, it tells me there’s an error connecting and to please make sure I am connected to the Internet... which of course I am because the rest of my computer has access. Two days in and I’m beginning to think this genie app is trash.

Yes, you must use an OpenDNS account in order to use LPC, because the cloud part is hosted and operated by OpenDNS.

"and then rejects my user name and password."

Weird.  Can you login at https://netgear.opendns.com/ ?  This is where Genie should try to login.

"it tells me there’s an error connecting and to please make sure I am connected to the Internet"

This has been reported before, and it may have been related to the version of the router firmware.
    See for example https://support.opendns.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115000926508

"I’m beginning to think this genie app is trash."

Could well be!  The router firmware and the Genie app are not software from OpenDNS, but from Netgear.  In case you can login at the website but not on this Netgear Genie app, best would be you contact Netgear support about this, or see if you find related threads in the Netgear community forum.  You also could raise a support ticket with OpenDNS, link "Submit a request" above.  They can review your account and may know about this issue and may be able to advise further.

Alternatively, give up using LPC but use the normal OpenDNS Home instead.
